making of wine requires little human intervention, but it each wine maker may have different techniques or ways of adding or changing things.<\/p>\n<p>From a simple home owner making wine from a kit to the most sophisticated Chateau in France, there are the same basic steps that are required.<strong>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>This is called the <strong>5<\/strong> step process<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0HARVESTING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wine grapes are the only fruit that have the necessary natural components to make natural and stable wine.\u00a0 \u00a0When the grapes are actually harvested<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/harvest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-367 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/harvest-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>will determine much of the characteristics of that wine.\u00a0 \u00a0The acidity,\u00a0 sweetness and flavor of the wine.\u00a0 \u00a0Determining the exact time to harvest is a science and itself.\u00a0 \u00a0Harvesting can be done by hand or using mechanical machines.\u00a0 Many wine makers prefer doing it by hand, since that will give them 100% control of what is picked and how it is done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 CRUSHING and PRESSING\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>It was fun watching Lucille Ball\u00a0 stomp around a barrel of grapes.\u00a0 \u00a0Some areas still continue to use this fun process.<a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/stomping.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" crushing of wine is done mechanically.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/mech-winepress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Still many use this method of crushing and pressing the grapes.\u00a0 \u00a0Either way, the liquid that results from this crushing\/pressing is called <strong>must.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>This is simply fresh squeezed grapes that contain, the skins, the pits, the stems, the seeds and more.\u00a0 \u00a0Then the process of removing those items begin.\u00a0 \u00a0For red wines, the skins are kept longer, giving the red color , deeper bouquet and provide tannis, which gives wine that extra long life.\u00a0 With white wines, the skins and such are removed much sooner than it is with reds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. FERMANTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ferment.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-371 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ferment-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ferment-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ferment-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is where natural or commercial yeasts are added to the wine.\u00a0 This fermentation continues until all the sugar is converted into alcohol, resulting in a dry wine, or remove, leaving residual sugar for a sweeter wine.\u00a0 The fermentation process can take anywhere from 10 days to over a month<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. CLARIFICATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fining-in-vats.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-372 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fining-in-vats-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fining-in-vats-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fining-in-vats-768x384.png 768w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/fining-in-vats.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clarification is the process in which solids such as dead yeast cells, tannins, and proteins are removed. Wine is transferred or \u201cracked\u201d into a different vessel such as an oak barrel or a stainless steel tank. Wine can then be clarified through fining or filtration.\u00a0\u00a0The clarified wine is then racked into another vessel and prepared for bottling or future aging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. A wine maker has two options: bottle the wine right away or give the wine additional aging. Further aging can be done in the bottles, stainless steel tanks, or oak barrels.
