For centuries, the winemaking business has been a male dominated if not exclusive occupation.\u00a0 \u00a0Its so refreshing to see that women have begun to enter this field and make a big impact on the industry.<\/p>\n

This move has not and is still not easy.. One problem immediately apparent in any sommelier survey is that the proportion of women in the Master Sommelier community remains glaringly small. In the U.S. there are currently 182 Master Sommeliers, of whom just 29 are women.\u00a0 \u00a0The better news is
\nthis year\u2019s Top 100 People in the U.S. Wine Industry<\/em> list by the blog IntoWine.com, 24 out of 100 were women.<\/p>\n

Two women always comes to mind when I think about wine making.<\/p>\n

Barbe-Nicole Clicquot<\/strong> ,\"\"<\/a> known as the \u201cGrande Dame of Champagne ‘<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nSusana Balbo<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0 She has been making a name for herself in the wine industry for over 30 years. She was Argentina’s first female \"\"<\/a>winemaker and the first woman president of Wines of Argentina, an organization that promotes the country’s wine industry to a global market.<\/p>\n

One of her trademarks, is the label on her Crios series of
\nwines. This family spirit lives and breathes with her Crios wine range.\"\"<\/a> Crios in Spanish means \u201coffspring\u201d and was created in 2001 as a tribute to her son, Jos\u00e9, and daughter, Ana.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Other notable women in wine for their major accomplishments are:<\/p>\n

Hannah Weinberger<\/strong>, the first female winemaker in Napa Valley<\/em> – 1880s<\/p>\n

Madeline Triffon<\/strong>, the first female Master Sommelier in USA<\/em> – 1987<\/p>\n

MaryAnn Graf<\/strong>f, the first female modern winemaker in California<\/em> – 1965ish<\/p>\n

Sarah Morphew Stephen<\/strong>, the first female Master of Wine<\/em> – 1970<\/p>\n

Here are some recent female winemakers that everyone should take notice to.<\/p>\n

Vanya Cullen\u00a0 – Cullen Wines, Margaret River, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Cullen, who farms by biodynamic principles, focuses on\u00a0Chardonnay<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cabernet Sauvignon<\/a>. For her, a sustainable mindset is paramount, as she considers herself a custodian of \u201can ancient land.\u201d The Wilyabrup, which means \u201cplace of red ochre,\u201d is a subregion of\u00a0Margaret River<\/a>\u00a0that Cullen believes provides \u201cthe purest expression of place because the natural environment is so clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trizanne Barnard –\u00a0 Trizanne Signature Wines,\u00a0 South Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In Kommetjie, a quaint village on South Africa\u2019s Cape Peninsula, Barnard makes wine for\u00a0her namesake label<\/a>. She sources grapes from two diverse regions, Elim and\u00a0Swartland<\/a>, and she strives to honor those origins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI respect the area from which I source grapes and try to make a wine that reflects as much,\u201d says Barnard.<\/p>\n

Luisa Ponzi – Ponzi Vineyards, Willamette Valley, Oregon<\/strong>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Ponzi gained perspective on Old World methods as she attended school in Beaune, France, and interned with Christophe Roumier, of\u00a0Domaine Georges Roumier<\/a>\u00a0in Burgundy, as well as Luca Currado, winemaker at\u00a0Vietti<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Piedmont<\/a>. She was exposed to more than just the stringent rules that shape European viticulture.<\/p>\n

Sarah Crowe – Yarra Yering, Yarra Valley, Australia<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In 2013, after a stint at\u00a0Bimbadgen<\/a>, she departed Hunter Valley for\u00a0Yarra Valley<\/a>. She\u2019s made\u00a0Yarra Yering\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0wines since, and picked up a 2017 Winemaker of the Year distinction from James Halliday.<\/p>\n

Kathy Joseph – Fiddlehead Cellars, Santa Barbara, California<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Joseph founded\u00a0Fiddlehead Cellars<\/a>\u00a0in 1989 in\u00a0Santa Barbara County<\/a>\u00a0and, in 1996, purchased the\u00a0Fiddlestix Vineyard<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Sta. Rita Hills American Viticultural Area<\/a>. Her wines express finesse, or \u201cpersonality with elegance,\u201d as Joseph puts it. Joseph\u2019s focus is on fewer varieties\u2014she grows\u00a0Gr\u00fcner Veltliner<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Pinot Noir<\/a>\u2014and refinement of technique.<\/p>\n

Helen Masters – Ati Rangi, Martinborough, New Zealand<\/strong><\/p>\n

Her advice for women who seek to be winemakers: \u201cI\u2019d equally give this advice to [all aspiring] winemakers. If you\u2019re passionate about wine, get into it, boots and all. Learn everything you can, go everywhere you can and most importantly, figure out how you want to work. There\u2019s huge diversity in the industry, with businesses large and small. Within that, there\u2019s great opportunity to find the one that suits you.\u201d<\/p>\n
