I was\u00a0 fascinated by the history of grapes , when they first were planted and used to make wine.\u00a0 \u00a0Then how all the various species of vine types made their way across the world creating specific styles of wine.<\/p>\n
It all started over 6,000 to 8,000\u00a0 years ago in the Near East.<\/p>\n
Earliest record of fermented wine is from 8,000 years ago in Georgia.\u00a0<\/em> The main grape vine (or father of all vines) is\u00a0 Vitis Vinifera<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n This is the main grape type used in making the wine classics from Europe, Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States.\u00a0 From this original species came the common grape varieties we know today.\u00a0 The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and more.<\/p>\n Further break out of the Vitis Vinifera grapes are<\/p>\n Amurenis\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Mostly in Asian wines Grapevines and grapes are grown just about in every country throughout the world.\u00a0 Even in the driest or coldest of climates, there are grapes to be grown.\u00a0 And where grapes are grown, wine is to be made.<\/p>\n Here are the top areas that plant vines \/ grapes for wine making purposes<\/p>\n Spain\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/em> \u00a0 \u00a011,750\u00a0 (all in km) The partial destruction of Grapes in Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n Grape phylloxera\u00a0 (an insect) originated in France.\u00a0 By the late 19th century, most of Europe vines were destroyed by phylloxera, mostly in France.\u00a0 Phylloxera insect is native to North America, where for the most part the grapes were resistant to the insect.\u00a0 Not so with Vitis Vinifera.<\/p>\n To combat this, most European vineyards developed a practice of grafting<\/p>\n their vines onto North American root stocks.\u00a0 \u00a0This was not suppose to have any impact on the actual growing or quality of the grape.\u00a0 \u00a0But you will hear many stories that say, the French wines prior to phylloxera were superior to any wine grafted onto an American root!\u00a0 Whatever the case, this practice saved Europe and allowed for the continuing growth and cultivation of grapes.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Grapes\u00a0<\/strong> (Here are just some of the more popular)
