{"id":119,"date":"2018-08-18T00:43:14","date_gmt":"2018-08-18T04:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/?p=119"},"modified":"2018-12-11T10:33:32","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T15:33:32","slug":"selling-wine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/2018\/08\/18\/selling-wine\/","title":{"rendered":"Selling Wine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/download-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-131 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/download-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/download-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/download-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Selling wine from a retail shop takes a person who is knowledgeable, fair and honest.\u00a0 Over the past 40 years I have worked at three wine retail shops.\u00a0 My primary job was to educate customers about wines and help them select the wine for them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Knowledgeable<\/b><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This is a key ingredient for any salesman.\u00a0 To properly sell any product you have to know and understand that product.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/good-sales.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2804 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/good-sales-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/good-sales-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/good-sales-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a> \u00a0Many times a customer would select a bottle of wine and ask me how it is.\u00a0 \u00a0If I have never had that wine, my answer would be.\u00a0 \u00a0<em>I have never tasted that wine, but the vineyard has a good reputation, the grape from that region is known for its light and fruity appeal.\u00a0 \u00a0So, I am going to assume, its going to be something like that.\u00a0 \u00a0If you would like, I could show you something that I have personally tasted and is in the same grape and price point.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em>The worse thing any salesman can do is try to make up a story, lie to the customer about the product.\u00a0 Its much better to just say,\u00a0 <em>I dont really know, but I will find out<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fair\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>When a customer comes in looking for a bottle of wine to serve with dinner, I would generally ask three questions<a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salesman-asking.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2807 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salesman-asking-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salesman-asking-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/salesman-asking-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>1.\u00a0 What are you having for dinner?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>2.\u00a0 Are you an avid wine drinker or just starting out?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>3. What is your price point<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>This sets the stage so that I can start narrowing down the type of wine that I believe would best suite the customer.\u00a0 \u00a0Play fair.\u00a0 Keeping in mind the answer to those three questions, should allow you to select a number of different wines.\u00a0 \u00a0Once I do get it down to a few, then I ask more questions about their likes and dislikes about wine.\u00a0 \u00a0I also tell them to throw away the notion that you have to have <em>White wine with Fish and Red wine with Meat.\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0 Whats more important is what you like.\u00a0 \u00a0If you dont like dry wines, but prefer sweet, then I will find a nice sweet wine for you.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0Honest\u00a0<\/b> This is so much easier for a wine salesman than the owner of the store.\u00a0 The owner needs to make sure the store is profitable, so they purchase wines that will give them the largest return of profit.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Sometimes those wines are good, but at times they are just borderline.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sales-good.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2808 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sales-good-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sales-good-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sales-good-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rdilauro.com\/CarpeVino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sales-good-1024x577.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 So, when the owner works with customers, more than likely they are going to direct the customer to those wines.\u00a0 \u00a0Its all about the money to them and it is their business.\u00a0 \u00a0 Now on the other hand, since, I had no direct ties to profit, I do not have to worry about the profit margins (but still as an employee, I do have to keep that in mind) I could find wines that would be <strong>best for the customer, not what is just best for the store.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0It could be one of those sale wines, but the key here would be to find the right wine for the person.\u00a0 \u00a0My biggest thrill\u00a0 is when a customer\u00a0 comes back and tells me how much they liked the wine I selected for them.\u00a0 \u00a0At that point,\u00a0 I&#8217;ve established trust and confidence with the customer and they will generally allow me to select their wines for them in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ONE MAJOR TIP FOR WINE SALESMAN<br \/>\n<\/strong>Never talk big wine snobbery words to a customer.\u00a0 \u00a0You do not need to use a lot of fancy wine jargon or terms that may go right over the head of a new customer.\u00a0 \u00a0Try to identify their level of wine experience and work with that.\u00a0 Make the customer feel comfortable with you.\u00a0 \u00a0That will go a long way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Selling wine from a retail shop takes a person who is knowledgeable, fair and honest.\u00a0 Over the past 40 years I have worked at three wine retail shops.\u00a0 My primary job was to educate customers about wines and help them select the wine for them. &nbsp;
